ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
A young woman named Alice Josephine Marshall, of Wellinct n, fid on Saturday at Palmerston Norcn after a brief illness. At the inquest the jury returned a verdict of “Death from blood poisoning.’’ A ridef was added to tho effect that there are suspicious circumstances connected with the death which warrant the police in fully inquiring. It was stated at the inquest that the police are in possession of important evidence.
The Heath is reported, at the age of ninety-two, of Quartermaster-sergeant Steel, tho oldest army pensioner in New Zealand. He came to Auckland in 1849 under the command of Colonel Haultain.
Mr J. V. Colborne-Veel died suddenly while attending a meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College yesterday. He came to Canterbury in 1860 and joined the staff of the ‘ Press,’ becoming its editor and serving in that capacity until 1878, when he became secretary of the North Canterbury Education Board, which position lie held up to the time of his death. A young man named Henry Cratnfield, who drives a cart for Mr Hill, of Kaikorai, was admitted to the hospital last night suffering from a fracture of the left leg. Cramfield was driving in the vicinity of Mrs Silk’s private hotel, when his dray collided with another vehicle, thus causing the injury mentioned.
