ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

A man, whose name is at present unknown, was killed at Upper Gatlin River on Wednesday afternoon. An elderly man named John Graham, casually employed in the Mutual Agency Company’s Store, met with a serious accident at the coal siding near the wharf this morning. It appears that a truck was standing a few feet away from the buffer at the end of the line, and Graham was in the act of crossing the line between the truck and the buffer when a number of trucks were shunted against the one which was standing, with the result that Graham had his left thigh severely crushed. He was attended to by Mr Loring (of the Railway Ambulance Brigade) and Mr Mearns, after which he was removed to the hospital in the St. John Ambulance litter. He was examined by Dr Gordon M'Donald, who discovered him to be suffering from a compound fracture of the left thigh. No blame is attached to the Railway Department Hettie Montague, daughter of Frank Montague, settler, of Hukernui, was found dead on the public road. She is supposed to have fallen from her horse.

When the accident happened to Piper at Weston a younger brother of deceased, who saw him fall over the cliff, immediately jumped down a depth of thirty feet without injuring himself, although the fall from the same height caused the death of his brother. —‘ North Otago Times.’ WELLINGTON, August 17.

A man was pulled out of the water at 1 a.m. in an insensible state, and died shortly afterwards. It is supposed that he was going on board one of the hulks. The man drowned in the harbor early this morning was named Earl, and was employed on the Union Company’s hulk. It is supposed that he fell in M'hile entering a boat to go off to the hulk.
