SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

DRAUGHTS CHAMPIONSHIP.

The match for the New Zealand championship and a stake of £SO, between Messrs Boreham and Brodie, commences on Monday evening; the proceedings to be under the management of a committee of draughts players. Brodie has been trained by Mr A. Raesidc (Mayor of Invercargill) and the well-known players W. MTllich and H. Montgomery, and he has received the services of Mr W. J. Frew (of Maheuo) as timekeeper during the day and Mr George Foreman for the evening sittings.

Nominations for nil events at Lbc Otago Hunt Club races close at 10 p.m. to-morrow. The ranks of the Carisbrook Cricket Club are likely to be strengthened this season in the person of Raines, the well-known wicket-keeper and batsman of the South Melbourne Club.

A large and enthusiastic meeting of students was held yesterday in the University chemistry room to reinstitute the Otago University Fives Club. On a ballot Messrs VV. E. Herbert, E. F. Melhuish, C. B. Snow, F. D. H. Ulrich, and A. R. Falconer (hon. sec.) were elected as a committee. Our cycling contributor has it on good authority that Mr Marshall, of the D.C.C., has challenged Mr JR. M'Kenzie, of the 0.C.C., for a road race to Henley. “Old Rod ” seems very eager for the fray. The race should prove to be an exciting one, as both men are excellent road riders. Several members of the Otago Cycling Club intend leaving town for Palmerston on Saturday afternoon, returning on the following day.
