COMPULSORY HALF-HOLIDAY.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—All honor and praise to our noble champion, Sir Robert Stout, and those who, like him, support a Saturday half-holiday for the shop assistants. Undoubtedly it is the best day for a half-holiday ; the majority ot the public arc in favor of it. We had it for nearly a year in Dunedin, and it worked well enough, considering the few who seemed opposed to it. A number of firms employing a large staff of assistants still continue to olosc on that day. I read iu to-night's issue of your paper, under "Political Points": "It is anticipated that the local bodies will fix Saturday for the halfdioliday in Auckland, Wellington, and Napier, and Wednesday or Thursday in Dunedin and Christchurch." I sincerely trust that this anticipation with regard to the last-named places will prove to be wrong, and that Saturday will be fixed upon. Surely our local body will sec that it is absurd to have any other day but Saturday. Should any other day be fixed on there will be nothing but discontent, and a continual clamoring will go on until Saturday is made the half-holiday, more especially if they have it in other parts of the colony. lam quite convinced, from both an employer and employe's point of view, that Saturday is best.—lam, etc., Samedi. Dunedin, August 1.").
