AN UNPOPULAR STEP.

[From Oub Own Correspondent.]

ROSS, September 15,

Intense indignation is felt in this district over the Postmaster - General's order to reduce the Ross post and telegraph office to a telephone station. A petition is being signed by the residents ot the Totara district strongly protesting against the reduction of a large mining centre to an ordinary telephone station. The Borough Council hold a special meeting to-night to ask the member for the district to prevent the change, which is doubly condemned as retrogressive and prejudicial to the district.
