SIR JOHN COODE AND THE HARBOR BOARD.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —Having read your report of yesterday's Harbor Board meeting (more fully reported in this morning's paper), there is one point in connection with the reference to Sir John Coode that appears not to have been taken notioe of—viz., that the firm now is not the firm as referred to by Mr Birr, bat merely that firm without the head or presiding genius. It was Sir John Coode, and he alone, who was asked to advise, and now that he is dead would it not be prudent {or the Board to consider whether. in the altered circumstances, some marine engineer of colonial reputation could not be found to give the Board the advice they seek. Mr O'Connor and Mr Napier Bell are well known, and there may be others whose opinion could be given from a personal examination of the harbor and the changes which are takiDg place up to date, and might, besides, be assisted by Mr Barr, Mr Stevens, and General Fulton.

The remaining members of the late Sir John Coode's firm may be very eminent engineers, but their fame has not reached New Zealand. I would therefore suggest caution before the Board commit themeelves to a firm of which they know very little, while we may have in the colonies marine engineers equally capable of advising.—l am, etc., A Formes Member. Dunedin, March 11, THE MEMBER FOR THE PENINSULA. SO THE EDI7OB. Sra,—lt does one good to think onr great unionist and working man's member for this distriot (Mr Earnshaw) and wife can now get a trip to the West Coast Sounds at a very cheap rate. It is but a short time ago since that be wanted to shake the dost of the colony off his feet, and sell his "traps." Now he has gone to reside up in Roslyn, and left the poor Flat and its anions. I have been twenty years on the Flat, aa have many more besides me, and we cannot afford a trip to the Sounds ; nor is there any likelihood, UDleas we be elected as Liberal candidates in the " working man's interest.' 11 —I am, etc., Disgusted Unionist. South Dunedin, March 11.
