Tbe Railway Commissioners' scheme of retrenchment provides for a reduction in salaries from 2h to 10 per cent. ; an increase of 5 to 10 per cent, on the rates for goods, and 5 per cent, on passengers' fares. The proposal is not acceptable to the Cabinet, who have pointed out that the savings suggested by Ministers have been completely ignored. The Cabinet are of opinion that the scheme now proposed will make the railways thoronghly unpopular. COLONIAL DEFENCES. MELBOURNE, March 11. The Government have cabled to Mr Stanhope, Minister for War, that tbe fortifications on Thursday Inland and King George Sound are actually in course of construction. Secretary Stanhope, in the House of Commons, reproaohed the colonies for supposed apathy in the matter.
