SPORTING INTELLIGENCE.

TURF OHIT-CHAT.

Coinage has been soratohed for the Anniversary Handicap, and Winchester for the Three-mile Trot for the ensuing race meeting at the Forbury. Acceptances close on Saturday night. Major George has succeeded in selling Reprisal in Melbourne for 500 guineas, but the reserve on The Workman was not reached, and the son of Robinson Crusoe will probably return to Auckland. Tempest for the Anniversary Handioap, Inohkeith for the Hurdle Eaoo, and Huguenot or Galtee for the CliHb aro my present selections for the 23rd inst, The race for the Esaenden Stakes, run at Melbourne on Saturday week, was an interesting one, chiefly by reason of the remarkable running of Zalinskl, who started an equal favorite with Highborn. Going out of the straight he went wide, and seemed for a moment to have got away from his rider. After regaining his position he led to the baok, and, falling back again here, seemed beaten all the way to the turn. When an opening offered he swept through at the curve, ana led on the inside entering the straight again, when Stromboli oame at him towards the finish. Those not knowing the two horses mu»t have felt certain the Chester oolt would win, bat when he had to be asked for a final effort it was, as usual, not obtainable, and the gamer oolt went away from him. After the raoe it was fully evident that Mr Wilson's declaration earlier in the spring that he was really unable to say whether Strathmore or Z&linski was the better colt will be generally oredited. The Newmarket Handicap winner, Wild Rose, is an illustration of -what may be achieved by a painstaking trainer with a good bnt not thoroughly sound animal. Prior to Saturday week, the only good race she had won was the Oakleigh Handicap at Canlfield a year ago. As a two-year-old she WBB trained for the Maribyrnong Plate, and Ike Foulsham thought her a better filly than Lady Betty, but she went wrong, and never started at that age. At three years she gave a lot of trouble and anxiety. In addition to suffering from rheumatism, the tendon of her near fore leg was injured, and her training for her first big race was chiefly in salt water. Apart from her pedigree, the fact that ahe won the Oakleigh Handicap last year in exceptionally fast time pointed to her being a good one over the distance. She is bred to win Newmarket Handicaps, however, being by Newminster from Primrose, and consequently full sister to Churchill, a former winner, as well as Newmaater and Perfume. She was bred by Mr T. Chirnside, and Mr Sayer gave 370 guineas for her as a yearling. Wild Rose ran in the Newmarket Handicap last year, and finished fifth, carrying with her a penalty of a stone, 4lb more than Bhe was handicapped for this year's race. The Admiral. DUNE DIN REGATTA. At a well attended meeting of the Dunedin Regatta Committee, held last evening, the Canvassing Committee reported that subscriptions were coming in freely ; so, given a fine day, our Upper Harbor affair promises to be a huge success. It was mentioned at the meeting that the Scullers' Race would provide a better contest than in previous years, as two of our local oarsmen, Messrs Hogan and M'Grath (both of dingey fame), are training hard with a view to lowering Palamountain'a colors. Judging by the number of sailing craft on the bay on Saturday afternoon last, the sailing events also should command increased attention. It was stated that there would probably bo over six entries for the first-class yacht race, which will be about a "record." It will also bo interesting to note how our smaller craft shape with the Dream in the secondclass yacht race. Dream was a champion in her class at Wellington, and holds an almost unbeaten rocord.

A trotting club has been formed at Wellington with about seventy members, and Mr H. Crawfurd president. It will be affiliated with the Canterbury Trotting Association. The Kurow Amateur Athletic Club havo subscribed L 5 53 to the expense of sending an athletic team Home, and express approval at sending Mr Cuff Home as manager. The Dunedin Club meet this evening, and, as the trip has been determined on and the team aro to be provided with credentials from the Government to the AgentGeneral, it is anticipated that further opposition will be withdrawn and a small vote passed. A one-legged bicycle race for a champion* ship took place at Minneapolis (United States) recently. The winnor made three miles in twelve minutes. This is the first championship race of the kind in the history of cycling, and the time made ia considered wonderful for a one-legged man.
