The V.A.T.C. spring meetiog was opened today. The morning broke overcast, and clouds of dust were flying about, but just before the first race a heavy shower of rain fell, The weather then cleared and re- I mained pleasant. A lawn tennis match wai played on Saturday between the ex-High School Girls' Club together with old High School Boys' and tho University Tennis Club. The match, which was exceedingly close throughout, resulted in a win for the University by the narrow margin of one game. The match was played on the 'Varsity court, and the loss of the second court, caused by the erection of the new School of Mines, was felt more than ever. Subjoined are the scores:—

CRICKET. The following shows the result of Saturday's matches: — Tho GraDge played a match President v. Vice-president. The former were dismissed for 2!, Johnston (11) being the only one to reach double figures. The Vice-president's side scored G6, Crawsbaw (24), Baker (16), Findlay (13, not out), and Carter (11) being the moat successful. The Albion, on the North Ground, played a match Captain v. Deputy-captain, which resulted in favor of the latter by 24 runs on the first innings, the scores bring 52 and 28. For the winners, Kemnitz (16), Burn9ide(l2), and for the losers M'Kenzie (13), played well. Tho Deputj -captain's side in their second innings were all disposed of for 42, Munro (11) and Ritchie (10, not out) being the highest scorers. Toe Opoho Club played Smokers v. Nonsmokerc The Non-smokers put up 25 (Drew 11), and the Smokers 72 (Hunter 23, M'Leanll, M'Cleary 9). The 'Daily Times' match Caplain v. Deputy-captain resulted in a win for the latter by two runs on the first innings, tbe scores being 50 to 52. Laurenaon (16), Ritchie (9, cot out), and Boraman (3) were the chief scorers for the Deputy-captain ; while Torrance (9), Hume (9), and Abernethy (8) were the highest on the Captain's side. In their second innings the Deputy's side male 100, M'Connochie (27, not out), Little (25), and Boraman (18) showing good form.

The Association football match between Auckland and Wellington took place on Saturday at Auckland, and rejulted in a win for Auckland by five goals to nil. About 400 people were preaent. In the first spell Evans secured a gaol for Auckland, and the remaining goals were scored in the second spell, Blair kicking two of them, and Thomas and Smith one each. The Aucklanders played throughout with more dash than their opponents, and paß3ed better than the Wellington men, who lacked condition, and were therefore unable to play a fast game. The Dunedin Cycling Club, under the command of the captain (Mr A, G. Melville), had a run to Outram on Saturday, Eighteen members started, but only twelve arrived at Outram. On the return journey the deputy-captain (Mr E. H. Reid) took command, and piloted the run safely home, arriving at the club room at 9.15 o'clock, The run was sat : Bfactory in every respect—the good muster, good roads, fair wind, aud th© splendid moonlight night all helping to make things very ehjoyable, and to en courage members to go in thoroughly for tho bo3t part of cycling—road riding. The New Zealand Cycluti' Alliance have granted permission to the Dunedin Cycling and Cbristchurch Touring Clubs to hold races in connection with the labor demonstrations on October 28.
