THE WORKS STATEMENT.
[From Our Parliamentary Reporter.] A FORECAST. WELLINGTON, September 8. The Works Statement, which is to be brought down to night, says that it is impossible to stop the Otago Central Railway at the present terminus. The Governnent therefore propose to appropriate L 30,000, to be expended iu extending this line from Middlemarch towards Hyde. Ou the Catlin River Railway nothing further is to be done at present. The Seaward Bush Railway will be extended twelve miles, to take it into a timber forest, the working of which is expected to recoup the cost of the extension. For special village settlements it is proposed to vo'e L 16.940 to cover estimated liabilities for further advances which settlers can claim, and for such local roads as the vote will permit. L 30,000 will be asked for to complete works in progress throughout the colony, road tracks, and for assistance to local bodies in the construction of roads, etc, LB,OOO is proposed to be set apart for waterworks on goldfields, The principal Auckland railway votes provided for are the extension of the Kamo line to Hikurangi; the vote to be taken from the money allocated for doubling the Auckland-Penrose line. This will open up the Pubipuhi timber forest. The sale of timber is expected to recoup the expenditure. It is proposed to extend the GrahamstownTo Aroha lino to Paeroa, and to let a small section of the North Island main trunk line at the Auckland end as soon as the Native Minister is satisfied that this will not interfere with land purchases. The Rotorua line wiil also be slightly extended.
It is stated that if the Manawatu Company want to sell the Wellington-Manawatu Railway they must approach the Government in the matter.
