WORK AND WAGES.
I By. Eleotbio Telegraph—Copyright.] [Peb Press Association.]
LONDON, September 1. Twelve thousand miners at Wrezbam and 25,000 at Cheßterfield have struck, demanding weekly wages and eight hours a day. A deputation representing the Eight Hours Demonstration Committee waited on the Government last evening at Wellington, and urged that the 28th October should be declared a public holiday as was the case last year on the occasion ot the labor demonstration. That day would be suitable for Auckland and Dunedin, but no reply had yet been received from Christohurch. The Hon. Mr Reeves said he could not definitely promise to grant the request, bnt he had little doubt that it would be granted on the understanding that next year the whole question would be taken into consideration whether the day was suitable to employers as well as employed.
