'My Pretty Jane' up to Date.
A recent issue of the 'Daily Telegraph' contained a letter from a correspondent, in which the writer insisted that the rates of marriages were always high when wheat wis a good price. This led to the veteran ' Punch' to weave the same argument into the following parody : My pretty Jane, my dearest Jane, Ah, never look bo eby ; But meet me, meet me in the market. When the prioe of wheat rules high. The glut is waning faßt, my love. And corn is Retting dear ; Good (Hymen) times aro coming, lore, Ceres our heart shall cheer. Then protiy Jane, though poorish, Jane, Ah. never pipe your eye ; But meet me, meet me at the altar, For the prioe of wheat rules high '. Y<e, name the day, the happy day, I can afford the ring ; For corn rules hich, the marriage rate Mounts up like anything The " quarter" stands at fifty, love, Which for Mark lane is dear ; Our wedding day is coming, love, Our married eourse is clear. Then pretty Jane, If poorish, Jane, Ah, never look so shy ; flnt meet me, meet mo at the nltar, When the price of wheat rules high ! »
