THE CHESS CONGRESS.
»' WELLINGTON, December 26. The New Zealand Chesa Congress was opened this morning. The representatives were :—Messrs F. Siedeberg (Dunedin), A. M. Ollivier and H. Hookham (Ghristohurch), A. J. Littlejobn, R. J. Barnes, W. Brown, and G. Bolton (Wellington), and J. Edwards j (Invercargill). Messrs Mouat (Danedin) and J. Sexton (Manawatu) are expected to-morrow. It is uncertain whether Messrs Ballance and Bryce will attend. At 5.30, when an adjournment Was made, the position of the game was:— Barnes v. Littlejohn.—Barnes has a knight and two pawns to the (rood, and should win comfortably. Siedeberg v. Ollivier.—Each has lost a bishop and two pawns. Eaoh kin? is more exposed than is usual at the 22nd move. The play is very exciting and close, but BiedeDerg will have to be • careful' in his next mores. Brown v. Edwards.—This game has already reached the end stage. Brown has a bishop and four pawns, Edwards a bishop'and three pawns. A close finish. Is Hookham v. Bolton. —Hookham has a rook, knight, and three pawns, Rolton a rook'and -four pawns. Bolton's pawns are well plaqed., but Hookham should [Farther particulars were looked for today, but they did not come!— Ed. E.S.]
