WORK AND WAGES.
[By Klbotbio Telegraph—Copvbighb ] [Per Press Association.} A BIG RAILWAY STRIKE. LONDON, December 25. The railway companies offered to refer the dispute as to the hours of labor to arbitration, but the men would not listen to the suggestion owing to the stoppage of traffic. Many large manufactories have had to cease work, and the collieries in the basin of the Clyde have been closed on account of the scarcity of railway waggons. The strike is seriously affecting the Glasgow meat market, butchers being unable to secure the usual consignments of bullocks and other live stock for slaughtering, partly owing to want of coal, and partly because of the paralysis nf the railway traffic. The sugar refineries have been compelled to temporarily stop work. The Docks Committee have made arrangements for continuing the discharge of vessels until February, A STRIKE OF "WHARF LABORERS. SYDNEY, December 26. A difficulty has arisen with the wharf laborers over the payment for working on holidays. The men engaged by the Union Steam Ship Company and the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company have struck against Is 6d per hour instead of the 2s which the owners had promised. LONDON, December 20. (Received December 27,1890, at 10.30 a.m.) The railway men demand ten hours'- work as the maximum for all grades, with eight hours' in the shunting yards. Many claim that overtime should be paid as time and aquarter, and Sundays as time and a-half. The secretaries of two English railway societies, numbering 80,000 men, urge neutrality at present. The railway men at Hull have struck for higher wages and shorter hours, (Special to Press Association,] LONDON, December 25.
