The Pope and Queen Victoria.
The following appears in the ‘ Irish Catholic ’: —“ During the recent stay of Queen Victoria at Aix-les-Bains, the Archbishop of the diocese, with his clergy, waited on Her Majesty, with whom the prelate had a lengthy interview. Having written to the Holy Father an account of the interview. His Grace received from the Pope a letter in which the following passage occurs : * Venerable brother, health and apostolic benediction. That which you have written to us with so much promptness and zeal on the subject of your interview with Her Imperial Majesty the Queen of England and of the conversation which you had with her has caused us an agreeable feeling of joy. We are pleased to know that she has received you with cordiality, and we felicitate you on having thanked her with so much truth because of her kindness to Catholics, and on having reminded her of the esteem we have always entertained for her since the first time we spoke to her when we were charged with the nunciature to Belgium. The remembrance of this time remains graven on our heart. Wo have admired the zeal which has induced you to inform us of a fact which touches us personally, and which was of a nature calculated to console us in the midst of the bitterness of the present time. Given at St. Peter’s, Rome, April 25, 1890, in the I3th year of our Pontificate, Leo XIII., Pope." __________
