The jubilee of the hoisting of the British flag (August 10, 1S40) at Akaroa 1b to be fittingly celebrated by the unveiling of an obelisk, suitably inscribed. The Government propose to vote LIOO for the purpose, and it is expected that Admiral Scott will send one of hia ships to take part in the proceedings. The New Zealand Alliance have issued a leaflet on which is printed a colored diagram showing the sums spent by the people of this colony during 1889 on intoxicants and on articles of general consumption. The diagrams are based on the figures of Mr C. M. Gray. A tall, black column, which dwarfs all the others, tells that strong drink last year cost L 1,996,286, while the other expenditures were: Beef, mutton, pork, etc., L 1,428,816 ; bread and Sour, L 1.395,716; boots and shoes, L 728.200 ; tea, coffee, and coooa, L 422.025 ; primary education, L 377,638; imported books, L 173,775. By issuing such leaflets, the significance of which everybody can understand, the Alliance will do much good.
