OUTBREAK OF PHYLLOXERA.
WELLINGTON, January 15. The Government have received a report from Mr W. M. Maskell on the alleged outbreak of phylloxera in vines in the Auckland
district. Specimens were submitted to Mr Maskell, who says that he has no reason to doubt that it is phylloxera, and recommends that the severest possible remedy should be applied to the di 3. trict round Auckland, that remedy being the total destruction of every vine in the |own and district of Auokland. On receiving thi3 report the Government, before proceeding to aot on it, consulted the SolicitorGeneral, who advised that the Government had no legal authority to order the destruction of vines, either with or without compensation. Nothing, therefore, can be done until nest session, when the Government propose to ask Parliament to pass an Act empowering them to deal with the matter. Application has been made to the Governments of Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales for copies of the Acts and regulations now in force in those colonies respecting the disease.
