News has been received here of the death of Phil Beck, the well-known actor. He committed suicide at Colombo (Ceylon) by shooting himself. SCIENTIFIC. . MELBOURNE, January 15. Sir James Hector has been nominated as President of the Australasian Society for the Advancement of Science for the ensuing twelve months. THE RED RUST PLAGUE. MELBOURNE, January 15. Before adjourning the society appointed a committee to make inquiries into the red rust which is at present playing such havoo with the wheat crops in the agricultural districts.
