As a tributs of respect to the memory of Mr William Gafre, of the Dunedin Brokers' Association, the Otago Stock Exchange did not meet for the transaction of business to-day. STATISTICAL. From the revenue returns for September quarter it appears the Customs produced L 410.427: stamps, L 134.271; and railway?, L 230.099; territorial revenue, L 54.399. The principal items of expenditure were : —lnterest and sinking fund, L 232 287; working railways, L 166.021: education, 1.88,007; post and telegraphs, L 79,122. The total receipts, iocluaing previous bilance of L 338.929. were L 1,231,541, and the total expenditure L 798.244. The land fund showed a deficit of L 25.064. Tho amount standing to the credit of tho Public Works fund is L 1.154,625. The postal returns for the quarter show: — Receipts, L 49.547; telegraphs, L 24.671; Government telegrams to the value of L 4.652 were also sent.
The table of the rainfall for September showß that rain fell on more than ten days at every station except Napier and Puysegur Point. At the former place it was wet on five days only, and at the latter on nine. At New Plymouth and Inglewood rain fell on twenty-nine and twenty-eight days, but whereas the total amount at the latter was 13 42in, tho highest record for the month! at the former was only 6 58. At Rotorua there was also a heavy fall, 12.03 in being recorded for twenty days' rain. The savings banks returns shows that 5,499 accounts were opened and 8,84t> closed. The deposits amounted to L 365,404, and withdrawals to 1348,104. Money orders were issued to the value of L 149.717, and paid to the value of L 138,635.
