The barque Clan M'Leod is rapidly putting out her cargo. She is all clear in her 'tween decks.
The Wairarapa was hauled out of the graving dock yesterday afternoon, and her place tiken up this rh' ruing by the H<.rald. The ship Auckland will complete taking in biklhst today, and sail for Lyttelton to moi row. Ihe Hauroto arrived from Sydney via Auckland and East Coast ports at noon to-day, and steamed alongside the George street pier to tratship cargo to the Waiiarapa. fr he left Sydney at 6 p.m. on. the 10t.li iust ; had fide weather until tho 12th, then etroug 5.9. K. arid westerly gales with heavy rain squalls until she breasted the Three Kings at 5 p.m. on the 14th, thenoe light winds with thick rainy weather to arrival at Auckland at 3p.m. on the 15th; remaiued there until Ip. m. on the 17th, when she left for the South; called at G'sborae on the 18th, Napier on the 19ch, Wellington on tho 20tb, leaving that port at 5.30 p.m. on the 21st, arrivirg at at 2.30 p.m. on the 22nd; sailed again at 6.15 p.m. same day, arriving as above. From Auckland to Wellington had light wind?, thence strong westerly, followed by a N.E. gale to Lytte.ton, and from that p-rt fresh southerly winds.
There are many indications that Australasia and its commerce are becoming more and more a matter worthy of oireful consideration in the great centres of mercantile activity of what are known as the Old and New Worlds. Tie latest evidonce that this is bo is the project now beginning to be Eeiiously takrn up io New Yoik for the establishment of a line of direct steamers to this fifth quarter of the globe. One of the papeis of that oity writes concerning the propos.il:—"lt has ken that a line of steamers between New York and Australia could be made to pay were it not for the fact that a return cargo would be difficult to obtain. Facts do not bear cut this supposition. Vessels are constantly plying between Australia and European ports, and no complaint is heard as to their losing money. But it has been 'suggested that a more certain means of making a line from New York profitable might be devised if a round trip from the States to the C*p9 of Good Hope and the coloniea, to return via Chinese and Indian ports, could be arranged. . . . Mawhera arrived 4 a in. from Wellington; sailed 6 a.m. for Greymouth.— Graf'on arrived 7 a.m. from Wellington; sailed 4 p.m for Westport. GreyHoutH.—Rosamond arrived early from Lyttelton; sails 8 p.m. for Wellington. ARRIVAL OF THE MORNING LIGHT. The ship reported on Monday afternoon, fifteen miles N.E. of the Heads, proved to be .the Morning Light from Boston. She reached the Head* last night, and was tendered early this morning by the Plucky, which brought her across the bar at seven o'clock in the charge of Pilot M'Dona'd. She anchored at Carey Bay in readiness for towing to Dunedin on this afternoon's tide, htr draught being 17ft lin. She' is a large woodm vessel of 1316 tonß register, was built at Nova Scota in 1870 by Mr G. H. Perry, and is owned by him She is ori her first visit to tbia part, as U also her cortmander. Captain Ladd, to whom we are indebted for the report of her paßßage, which has been accomplished in 101 days from port to port, and has been marked by some heavy weather while running down her easting. When fifteen miles to the eastward of Taiaroa Heads she waß struck by a very heavy sea, which broke twenty-eight stanchions and damaged 60ft of her bulwarks on the port side, besides doing other damage. Captain Ladd reports signalling off the Bloff at 6 p.m on the 20th inst., and was responded to by those on shore, but,- from some unexplained cause he was not reported, which v.e consider a great oversight, ai the arrival of all vessels, especially those from foreign ports, are always anxiously looked for. She brings some 2,175 tons of cargo, about onehalf of which is for Dunedin and the r. mainder for Lyttelton. The Morning Light left Boston on July 12 with a light westerly wind, whioh held until she reached latitude 35deg N., longitude 50deg W.; met with light S„ S.E., and baffling winds until August 1, whon the first of the N.F\ trade was taken ia latitude 22dfg 50* in N., longitude 4ldeg W.; the trade was fresh, and gave out on August 6 in latitude 18degN., longitude 35deg 20min W., and was followed by the S.W. monsoon, attended by dirty, equally weather, until AugUEtl4, when the S.E. trado Bet in in latitude 2deg 30min N. ; crossed the Equator on August 16 in longitude 28deg 30min S.; the S E, trade was strong, and carried her down to latitude 20dcg S. on August 22, being succeeded by light southerly and baffling winds until she reached latitude 38leg S , longitude 21deg W., when the first of the westerlies was taken; crossed the meridian of Greenwich on September 9 in latitude 43deg S., encountering strong westerly gales, attended by a veiy heavy sea; rounded the Cape of Good Hope on September 15 in latitude 4 Ideg S , when heavy eas'orly gales set in from the N.E. to S.¥., attended by a very high sea; the vessel was kept bead reaching under her lower topsails for thirty-six hours, when the wind again veered to the westward, blowing hard, with heavy Bea; sighted Apostle Island on September 25; encountered a succession of gales from S.W. to N.W., with high seas, across tho Southern Ocean ; passed the meridian of Cape Leeuwin on October 7 ia latitude 4b'deg 35min S., still keeping similar weather; passed Tasmania on October 14, when the weather moderated; met with light baffling winds from the S. round to N. until making hor first landfall, Puysegur Point, at 6 p.ra. on the 19th; signalled off. the Bluff at 6 am. or the 20th, and passed the Nuggets at noon with a heavy W, S.W. gale, with terrific squalls, the vessel being under her lower topsails fat 9 p.m. Cape Sannders wad I nine miles distant, but owing to the heavy ga'e and high sea was blown past the Heads; at
11.30 p.m. Taiaroa Heads bore fifteen miles east; was struck by a heavy sea; the gale moderated on the morning of the 22nd, and veered to the northward, which brought her up to the Heads last night. Neither ice nor wreckage was seen,
