it is believed that Lord Charles Bcrcsford, woo resigned his seat in the House of Commons for Marylebone in order to take command of a warship, will be appointed to H.M.S. Undaunted, twelve guns.
AN OBJECTIONABLE PLAY. PARIS, October 19. The Turkish Ambassador at Paris has protested officially against the revival of Voltaire’s play ‘Mahomet’ at the Theatre Francais.
MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL. LONDON, October 20. The English wheat market is depressed, while the Continental is declining and the American is unchanged. Colonial beans average 38s. New Zealand hemp, L 29 15s to L3O. The money market is dull owing to large arrivals of gold being expected. Three months’ bills are quoted at 35 per cent.

Three thousand miners employed In the Marquis of Londonderry’s Durham collieries have struck for shorter hours. Fifteen thousand more threaten to strike unless better terms are conceded by the owners.
THE ZALINSKI GUN CONDEMNED. LONDON, October 20. In contrast to Sir Andrew Clarke’s opinion of the Zalinski dynamite gun, the naval officers delegated to inquire into its merits report it to be useless for naval warfare, owing to the intricacy of the mechanism necessary to ensure the safety of those working the guns.
