Practical Household Recipes, to which are added chapters on Garden Management and Legal Memoranda. By an old Colonist. Wise, Caffin, and Co., Dunedin.

The first fifty-nine pages of this handy little volume are devoted to recipes for the preparation and cooking of food. The author does not profess to teach anything new in this department of domestic economy. All that is claimed is clearness and precision in the directions given, readiness of reference, and a selection of tho choicest recipes for preparation of tasty, wellcooked dishes. The nert dozen pages are devoted to directions for carving; an elegant art which, well performed, adds to the pleasure of a good dinner. Then follow instructions in preserving and pickling fruits and vegetables, and some very useful hints in household management, tending to neatness and care of furniture. Following these are some very plain directions for the treatment of accidents and frequent ailments. These should be in everyone's mind, so that they may be adopted in case of sudden emergency. A minute, in many cases, decides between life and death. We need not enumerate the many excellent directions for a variety of processes occurring in every family daily. There are plenty for use, for amusement, and for profitable employment of leisure moments ; and the legal hints, if carefully studied, will enable anyone to avoid many of tho errors and complications to which those ignorant of legal obligations aro liable. The book is really a very useful compilation.
