The American scheme, however, is still in nubibus, but London is to be provided with an Eiffel Tower at once, and a syndicate of English business men has taken the matter in hand with characteristic British thoroughness. The syndicate consists of seven gentlemen, mostly "railway kings," with Sir Edward Watkin, the energetic author of the scheme for the Channel tunnel, as chairman. A site has been secured, the capital is practically subscribed, and the scheme is to be completed in two years. The London " Eiffel" is to be a purely domestic product, constructed of British steel, and by British labor. The conception of an iron tower I,oooft high had its birth, it seems, in a British brain, that of Trevithick, the real inventor of the locomotive engine, and M. Eiffel only pirated the great Cornishman's conception. The now Eiffel, or rather Watkin, Tower will therefore rise on what may be called native soil, when it lifts its majestic head above the fogs of London. It ib to include, of course, many improvements on the French pattern—amongst others, the lift is' to be run in one swift, straight, dizzy flight from floor to crown. To quote Sir E. Watkin: "Clients of mine intend to try what they can do in the erection of a tower of Scotch and English steel, to be higher than the Eiffel, and to be constructed on the old English principle of cash for very much less than a quarter of a million, at which the Eiffel Tower stands on capital account to-day." This great enterprise is to be erected by a company with a capital of only L 200.000. The Melbourne 'Telegraph' says editorially that the Victorian capital ought to have its Eiffel Tower.
