Takapuna, s.s., 370 tons, Grant, from Northern ports. Passengers : Mrs M‘Neill and family (3, Misses De La Roche, Little, Uliug, Measra"Brady, >M‘Neill,‘ Paynter, Uling, Domfrain, Parsons, and eight in the steerage. Dingadeo, s.s., 893 tons, Downie, from Westport.
The Takapuna, with cargo and passengers from the North, arrived at Dunedin at 9,30 a.m. to-day. i-he left Nelson at 0.30 p.m. on the Ist inst.; called at the French Pass and Picton on the same day, and left Wellington at 3.30 p.m. on the 2nd inst. ; arrived at Lyttelton on the morning of the 3rd; left that port at 1.15 p.m.; called at Akaroa, and left again at G p.m., arriving as above. She experienced muggy weather in the earlier part of the trip, and afterwards fine weather to arrival. The Brier Holme will be towed down to Port Chalmers to-morrow.
The Margaret Galbraith commenced taking in her stiffening ballast to-day. The Sybil is landing cargo at tho Jetty street wharf.
The Waitangi is all but clear of cargo. After taking in ballast she goes to Port Chalmers to take in part of her homeward cargo. The Brunner having been cleaned and repainted was hauled out of the graving clock this morning, and her place taken up by the Grafton. The Diogadee, with COO tons coal from Westport, arrived at 3 a.m. to-day and steamed alongside the hulks at the Bowen pier to discharge. She left Westport at 2 p ra. on the Ist inst; passed Cape Campbell at G. 43 p.m. on the 2nd, and Banks Peninsula at 1.30 p m. on the 3rd, arriving as above, having experienced N.W. to westerly winds, with heavy sea and thick weather, until passing Stopseu Island, thence fresh S.W. and southerly winds to arrival. Manapouri arrived 9 a.m. from Lyttelton; sails 7 p.m. for Napier Wareatea arrived 10 30 a.m. from Greymouth. Nelson.— Penguin arrived 4 a.m. from Wellington ; sailed 4 p.m. for Wellington. Westport.— Manawatu arrived 2 a.m. from Wellington; sailed 5 a.m. for Wellington.— Omapere arrived 3 a.m. from Greymouth. Gbeyhodth Moa arrived early from Wanganui; sailed 11 a.m. for Westport. Napihi.—Australia arrived 5.80, a.m. from Gisborne; sailed 10 a.m. for Wellington. Gisborne. Tarawera arrived noon from Auckland ; sailed 4 p.m. for Napier,—Southern Cross arrived 6 a.m. from Napier; sailedß a.m. for Auckland.
Auckland.— Wakatipu arrived 12,30 p.m from Napier.
ARRIVAL OF THE MATAURA.
The barque Mataura, 853 tons, from London direct, arrived at Oamani yesterday morning, and was brought in by the Progress and berthed at the Sumpter wharf. She left London on June 22 at 8 p.m., experienced light variable winds and calms down the Channel, continuing up to latitude 41deg N. The N.E. trade wind was picked up in latitude 27deg N, longitude 21deg "W., and moderate and fair weather was experienced to latitude lOdeg N., and longitude 25deg W.. when the trade wind was lost. Very light winds and calms were the order of the day until the Line was crossed in longitude 27deg W. Light retarding breezes and calms were experienced until latitude 34deg S. was reached. On the 16th August vivid lightning and a fallii g glass betokened a change in the weather, and a heavy gale from the north struck the barque, the high sea continually breaking over her and washing away all the movable articles from the dock. On the abatement of the gale light westerly winds, changing to head S S.E, winds, were experienced. On August 21 Tristan d’Acunha ivas sighted, and from thence onwards the barque, with favorable winds, made an average run of 210 miles per day until within 200 miles of the Snares. The meridian of the Snares was passed at midnight on Monday last. On Tuesday the Nuggets Point was sighted, and the barque reported but received no answer. She also reported at Cape Saunders on Tuesday, at 7. a.m., and at Otago Heads. Calm weather and light breezes have been generally experienced, which accounts for the somewhat lengthy passage made. The barque is in very good order, and, after dischareing her Oanwru cargo, will proceed to the Bluff and discharge the remainder. The Hit of officers is as follows Captain, Mr J. B, Martin; first mate, Mr J, G. Roberts ; second mate, Mr J. W. Watkins; third mate, Mr T. B. Gordon; stewaid, Mr J. Horne.—* Oamaru Mail. Shipping? Telegrams. AUCKLAND, October 3, Tarawera, for the South. Passengers: For Dunedin—Mr,Mrs, and Miss Stephenson; ten steerage.—Largo Bay, for London, with a cargo valued at L.30,000. October 4 : Auckland, ship, for Port Chalmers. —Dunedin, schooner, for Sunday Island.— Schooner Yinglex, from the Huon Group and Long Island, with guano. The master (Captain Walsh, of Auckland) died very suddenly from heart disease on the 18th August, at Lelazour Island (Huon Group), and was buried on shore next day. Walsh was thirty-three years of age. He leaves a wife and child here. Wellington, October 3.— Rotorua, for Lyttelton. Passengers: Messrs Greenstreet, Titchner, and Maloroft.
