West, Esq., 135 Euston road, London, Dear Sir,—Being intimate with one of the principal supervisors of excise here I sent him a few dozen of Messrs Speight and Co.’s Dunedin Beer with the object of getting the opinion of the Excise Chemist on it; and lam glad to say he has pronounced it one of the finest Beers he ever analysed, it having the high specific gravity of lO.SOdeg, the greatest amount of spirit and the least quantity of acid he ever came across. When I tell you that every shipment of Beer going out of the Clyde must be sampled by the excise officers and then analysed by their | chemists, I consider this opinion is better than anything else I could say on it. At present the Beer is too flat to send to anyone not an expert in the trade; bat as soon as it comes into condition I will have it distributed, Yours very truly, (Signed) ROBB, MOORE, AND 00. (Per H. S. Moore). A Correspondent writes Please send me some more of that Speight’s | Ale you are bottling. I am very particular : bout the beer I have, and hitherto have had a down on “Colonial,” preferring to pay the Higher price for the best brands of English Bottled Ale. I must confess, however, that what you have sent me pleases me in every respect as well as any I have ever used. Perhaps the great difference in price between 10a and 14a a dozen has affected my judgment, but I do not think so. At any rate, so long as you maintain the quality at the same standard you should be able to supplant the imported article. To John Barron, 29 Rattray street, RHBINGOLD CIGARS. THE following letter, which, among many others, has recently been received, fully bears out the reputation claimed for the above cigars Grand Hotel, Dunedin, September 23,1889, During my visits to the colonies I have found it difficult to obtain good cigars at moderate prices. I have tried them at many prices, from (id up to Is 6d each, but without satisfaction, I did not think of trying below 6d until a few RHEIN GOLDS were offered me, and after smoking them I was convinced they were very good cigars, and wondered I had not hit on them before; but on learning their price I understood why I could not get them in the best hotels. As an old smoker I can confidently assert that they are better than any cigar for which I have paid 64 in the innumerable hotels I have stayed at in the Australasian colonies. Frederic Maccabe.
