MINING NOTF, Tho Fair Maid Gold Mining Company return for Thursday and part of Friday was 38i.z of amalgam from tables. Tho dredges for the Wakatipu Dredging and Eawai au Big Beach Dredging Companies are being constructed by Messrs R. S. Sparrow, and excellent progress has been made towards their completion. The frames are finished and the boilers nearly completed, while tho patterns of the engines have been made. It is expected that the dredges will be at work on tho claims by January. Mr J. A. Chapman learns that yesteiday the Golden Bar fshotover) Dredging Company let a contract for tho building of a large dredge for the purpose of working iheir claim. Tho Horseshoe Bend Company intend taking steps to have a dredge constructed for their claims Favorable reports have been received from the Beaconsfield (Westport) Mine, and tho systematic manner in which _ the progressive works are being carried on is favorably commented on. The reef is said to be well defined. It is expected that the reef will be struck at a low level. Tho sitt ing of the Warden’s Court at Macraes which concluded last Friday was the 11 biggo't on record ” for that locality, close on 300 applications of various descriptions being dealt with. STATISTICAL. The Customs returns for September were LU0,331, against L 127.000 for tho corresponding month of last year. The amounts collected at the principal peris were—Auckland, L 30,442; Wellington. L 27.974; Christchurch, L 23.594; Dunedin, L 36.897. The total amount for tho September quarter was L 415,190. The beer duty for the September quartet was L 4.063, against L 3.538 last year Auckland returned L8I5; Wellington, L 43 3; Christchurch, L 736; and Dunedin, L 1,082.
