A sad fatality occurred at Kairanga, Mauawatu, on Friday. A girl of five years and a boy of two, the latter a son of Mr Burmeister, were playing in the rosd when the boy fell into a ditch and was drowned before assistance arrived. All efforts at resuscitation proved of no avail.
A man named Kirby, employed on the Manawatu Gorge works, met with a fatal accident yesterday afternoon. He was reaching for the rope of the cage which spans the river at the tunnel when he slipped from tho stage on to the rocks in the bed of the river, a depth ot 20ft. His arm was shattered and his head split open. Death ensued shortly after.
