Of this mm, LI,OOO is added to the reserve fund, Ll4,ooois absorbed by the payment of a dividend at the rate of 7 per cent, per annum, and the balance is carried forward. THE LABOR MARKET. Mr Skene reports that there is a decided spurt in tho demand for all sorts of country people. Current wages:—Couples, L 65, L7O, and 1*75; ploughmen 20/, second-class 15s to 17s 6d; shepherds, L 55, L6O, and L7O; cooks, 20* and 255; gardeners, 25s and 30s; blacksmiths, 25a; grooms, 15s and 20s; milkers, 10s, 12s, 15s, and 20a; flax boys, 6s and 7s 6d; store hands, 15s and 20a; hotel cooks, 30s to 50a, etc. MINING NOTES. The result of the trial crushing of one ton of stone from the Canton reef, Waipori, gave 4Joz of retorted gold. As the stone crushed was all clean, solid stone, this must be considered highly satisfactory. Wo are informed that the stone was taken from a depth of 63ft, and at that depth is 18ft in width from wall to wall.
