The Kakanui, with cargo from the Bluff, arrived at tho Rattray street wharf on Satu • day afternoon, and landed cargo. She left this afternoon for Waikawa. The Nelson was towed up from Port Chalmers this morning and berthed at the cross wharf, when she commenced discharging cargo. The Herald, with transhipments for Auckland, and Wareatea with tiaushipments from the Coptic for Welling.on, sailed on Saturday evening. The Beautiful Star, from Oamaru, arrived at 9.40 p.m. on Saturday. She left Oamaru at 3 p.m. on that day. In addition to other cargo, she brought 63 bales of wool for transhipment to the Coptic. During the week commencing August 23 and ending September 1 the following vessels have been at the Dunedin wharves: Arrivals : Invercargill 123 tons, Mahinapua 205, Beautiful Star 14S (twica), Te Anau 1,028, Biunnsr 332. Takapuna 370, Thomas and Henry 212, Herald 352, Kakanui sli; total, 2,179 tons. Dcpaitures: Kotorua 570 tons, Balaton Sl4, Beautiful Star 146 (twice), Invercargill 123, Kakanui 5(5, Jasper 2b2, To Acau 1,028, Takapuna 370, Brunnor 332, Mahinapua 205, Herald 352; tota', 4,400 tons. Tho 8.M.?. Coptic saih this evening for London via Lyttelton. Her cargo from this port consists of about 900 hales wool and skins, 12 casks pelts, quantity ca es of cheeae, and 9,360 carcasses frozen mutton. Tbe lighthouse will be erected on tbe higho t point of the island, bout 85fk ftbovo the lsvel of the sea. The frame will bo of timber, and this will be sheltered v,i hj galvanised iron plates. The height of the lightroom floor will be 35ft., the lantern and lightroom altogether having an additional height of £3ft. The apparatus is to bs a second order revolving light, which flashes at intervals of a minute. Tho light vill be visible fiom a distance of about nineteen and a half miles. There will be three lightkeepers stationed on the island. Tho Froudfoet lightship is twenty-five milos west by north trom Booby Island.—'Australasian Shipping News.' On Ju'y 11 Messrs R. and W. Hawthorn, Leslie, and Co, of Hepburn, launched for Mc-ssis Turnbul), Martin, and Co , of Glasgow, a large screw steamer built for the New Zealand trade. The length < f tho vessel is 300 feet and breadth 48ft, with a deadweight capacity of 5,500 tirs. She has been specially built for the carriage of dead meat f rem the colonies to England, and her holds are fitted with oxclusivo refrigerating chambers and refrigerating engines of tho most improved pattern. Sh3 hai accommodation fur fifty first-class passengers in a fine saloon aft, the state rooms being large and well ventilated. *Oie is fitted throughout with electric light ar.d machinery of the mo3t improved type for the rapid loading and discharge cf cargo. The engines are triple expansion, also by Messrs Hawthorn, Leslie, and Co., and are of about 5,500 horse-power. Tho vessel has been built under tho supfciiatendencd of Mr John WotherBpoon, and is clasied 100 Al at Lloyds. The lonic (Plymouth, August 10) loft Cape Town on Saturday morning. The R.M.P. Tongariro left Rio <?e Janeiro for Londi n on August 30. The Coptic gives us a very good idea of what benefit the etcam service is t> this colony. It was 102 days to yesterday from tbe time that steamer left Lyttelton for London last. Phe was eleven days in London discharging her cargo and receiving her cirgo for this colony, and allowing five days for stoppages homewards and outwards, she has been steaming a total of eighty-seven days, during which time she has covered something like 25,499 miles on an average of about 293 a day, or nearly twelve and a-half mileß per hour.' THE RECORD LOWERED. The R.M.S.S. Victoria arrived in the Bay at three o'clock yesterday morning. On the present occasion, however, she has bettered her recent performances, and the mails were landed at Adelaide in a little over twenty-eight days, or seven d ys before the time. Hero they were received within thirty days, or five days before they weie due. This indicates fast steaming, and yet the whole strength of the massive machinery on board the Victoria was not put forth to its uttermost limit. There is a reserve limit with the Jubilee boats which may not be [ overstepped except on special occasions, or without special instructions. It was believed on board during the voyage that the Victoria wuuld arrive here on Sunday last, bat there were at least three days in the latitude of the S.E, trade, where die had to try conclusions with determined head winds and a high opposing sea. Thc-ro was some heavy plunging during that period, and although the governor, one of the most powerful and effective of its description, was in gear tbe engines raced considerably. On one of the days the running dropped to 268 miles. The Mediterranean portion of the voyago was accomplished at 15-knot speed, and from Suez to Aden the distance was dono at li>2 knot speed. From Aden to Colombo the averaee wai fully 10 knots, and from Colombo to Albany it was close up to 15 knots, From Albany to Adelaide, and thence to Melbourne, the Victoria travelled at close on sixteen knots. From Suez to Aden the runs were as fo'low:—3s6, 371, 366, and 288, the latter number representing a short day, or something like twenty hours' steaming. From Aden to Colombo the runs were:—3Bß, 410, 383, PW, and 367 knots. Thence to Albany the record was:—2l4 (portion of a day), 365, 367, 357, 348, 329, 268, 345, 369, 365, and 380. From Albany to Adelaide the days' runs were:—276 (portion of a day). 379, 366, and 295 knots. The foregoing will afford some idea of what the Victoria is capable cf accomplishing in an ordinary way, and without laying special stress on her boiler power. The present quick run out has been mode with a view to her speedy return to London, so as to be there in time for Australian passengers who leave England at the approach of winter there, and who make for Australia as tho local summer season draws nigh.—' Argus,' August 20. snipping Telegrams.
