The score (231 points) made by Sergeant Reid, of the Ist Lanarkshire Engineers, for the Queen's Prize this year was the highest ever recorded for the coveted honor. Major Pearse, 4th Devon Rifles, made 280 in 1875. A tablet has been placed in Florence in memory of Salveno degli Armati, who is said to have invented spectacles in the 13th century.
