THE EXHIBITION RIFLE MEETING.
I Per United Pbes-i Association. 1 WANGANUI, August 23. Captain Sommerville has received word that 250 Martini-Henrys for the N.Z.K.A. meeting arrived by the Aorangi, and are now available at L 3 Is ; also, that 100,000 rounds of ammunition have arrived. [From Our Own Correspondent.] WANGANUI. August 23. With reference to the Martiui-Henrys, Captain Sommerville informs me that a very large number of applications are being notified, and he wishes it to be known that they must go through the officers commanding the district to the Defence Department, The present instalment is only half of the shipment, and ammunition has been procured in Australia in order to save delay of waiting for a sailing vessel with 50,000 rounds. He has no information yet of a vote on the Estimates, but, considering the number of letters received from Australia and all parts of New Zealand, he has reason to believe that, if the prizes are made substantial, he will have a large attendance.
