[Per United Press Association.] TIMARU, August 22. After being locked up all night, the jury in Birrell's case returned a verdict of " Guilty." Sentence was deferred pending the consideration by the Court of Appeal of two technical points. One indictment was withdrawn and two others held over till next sitting. Bail was fixed in LSOO and two sureties of L 250 each. In the appeal against the conviction and fine of L2OO against the South Canterbury Refrigerating Company judgment was reserved. • CHRISTCHURCH, August 22. In view of the possibility of heavy floods in the Waimakariri, the Waimakariri River Board to-day decided to erect a large embankment higher up the river than any previous works. The extraordinarily large accumulation of snow on the ranges indicates that the floods may be more than usually severe this season.
