During the week commencing August 12 and ending August 19 the following have been at the Dunedin wharves ; Arrivals : Sarah Pile 115 tons, Invercargill 123 (twice), Manapouri 1,020, Mahinapna 203. Wairarapa 1,028, Tokapo 1,544, Lizzie Ellen 40, Beautiful Star 14G (twice), Jasper 252, Penguin 442, Omapero 352; total, 5,536 tons. Departures : Takapuna 370 tons, Pleione 1,092. Invercargill 12:1. Beautiful Star 146 (twice), Manaponri 1,020, Wairarapa 1,028, Enterprise 84, Janet Ramsay 41, Sarah Pile 115, Tekapo 1,544; total, 5.709 tons. The barquentine Jasper has put out about 125 tons of sugar at the Rattray street wharf. The ship Ralston is putting out the last of her cargo at the cross wharf. The dredge No. 222 is completing preparations for sea. and is expected to leave for Melbourne on Wednesday. The flags at the Harbor Offices and of the vessels in port were hoisted half-mast high today as a mark of respect for the late Captain Simms, of the Wellington Pilot Service. The Beautiful Star arrived at 11.30 p.m. on Saturday. She left Oamaru at 3 p.m, on that day ; had strong southerly winds, with head sea and showery weather, down the coast. The Aorangi put out the last of her cargo this morning, and took on board a quantity of frozen mutton. The Omapere, with 440 tons coal and 400 bags coke from Greymouth, arrived at Port Chalmers at 3 a.m. yesterday, and steamed up to Dunedin. She left Greymouth at midnight on the I4th inst., arrived at the Bluff on the 17th, left again at 2 p.m. same day. '
Tho Waimate is expected to sail to-morrow for Wellington, at which port she completes her loading for London. The Sarah Tile is receiving an overhaul in the graving dock. THE DIRECT STEAMER?. She left Williamstown at 5 p.m., and cleared Port Phillip Heads at 7 p.m. on the 14th ; passed Swan Island at noon next day; she was abreast the So’anders at 10 a.m. on the 18th, arriving as above. Westport, —Manawatu arrived 4 p.m. Sunday; sails 6 p.m, far Greymouth. Orowait arrived from Lyttelton. THE S.S, BAYLEY. The Bayley reached Oamaru on Saturday afternoon from London via Melbourne, Sydney, and Rockhampton. She is rigged as a threemasted schooner, and she carries a sufficiency of canvas to assist her in case of serious accident to the machinery. The great feature of her machinery is that it is economic in its working. As illustrative of this, it may be mentioned that during the voyage from Las Palmas to Port Phillip, a distance o 10,40 mil a,the engines never once ceased working, and the average of 254 miles per day was accomplished on the almost ridiculously small consumption of nineteen tons of coal per day. She is especially a frozen meat cargo vessel, and is fitted with three of Hall’s (Dartford) 120 horse-power improved patent refrigerating machines. Two of these machines are capable of freezing tho 23,000 carcasses which she can carry. The spare one is in case of emergency. The Bayley left London on May 23. Captain Childs elected to run down tho easting on tho higher parallel of 44deg S , and along this line of latitude the Bsyley had cnly occasional interval of moderate weather. All else was an almost continuous record of howling hurricanes and stupendous seas, varied by frightful squalls of snow and hail, and rain and sleet, all along the meridian of Capo Leeuwin. On the 29th June, during one <f the fiercest of the gales, the steamer was encompassed by a dangerous sea, in which wary handling ef the vessel was requisite. To lessen the threatening peril tho device of pouring oil on the troubled waters was resorted to, and with wonderful results, tho ship running much easier, and comparatively dry considering the sea that was on. Tho Bayley was on tho longitude of Cape Leeuwin on the Cth July, and thence moderate S.K. and southerly winds continued until arrival in Port Melbourne on the 12th. After discharging cargo she coasted to Sydney, steaming 11J knots an hour. Her presage to Rockhampton was uneventful, and after taking on board 400 tons of frozen moat (tho second errgo of a new industry in Queensland) she left for Oamaru on the 10th August, the had rather a rough passage till she passed through Cook Strait, and the weather down tho coast was fine. After taking on board some 13,000 carcasses of mutton here she will leave about Thursday far the Bluff. Her officers are: Captain Childs (late of the Energia); Mr G. rSliis, purser ; R. C. Keys, fip-t mate ; J. Balmans, second ; and W. Woolcott, third. The steamer’s engineers are: Messrs W. Atkinson, chief; Strender, second; Duncan, third; Blair, fourth.
