The superintendent of the cable station at Wakapuaka wires:—“ We are in communication with the repairing steamer, She reports heavy swell, wind S.E., sky cloudy ; soundings, 287 fathoms.” A message dated Wakapuaka, 3 p.m., from the Sheravd Osborne, reports all uoing Well. CHRISTCHURCH, August 19. It is now nearly a year since the top of tho Cathedral spire was knocked off by the earthquake, but nothing as yet has been done towards its reconstruction. Dean Jacobs says, after the offer of the Rhodes family to repair it, itjwas deemed advisable to obtain the opinion of an expert in the construction of earthquake-proof buildings. Mr Waters, engineer of the Westport Coal Company, who is lately from Japan, has been communicated with, but no reply is yet to hand.
