The Union Steam Ship Company have presented Captain Fairchild, of theHinemoa, with a graphotcope, for the prompt services he rendered to the passengers and crew of the Muitai, when she was wrecked on Mercury Island on June 2. NELSON, August 15.
At the Land Board to-day a lease was gr.oiU d to the Westport Coal Company of a portion oi the late Wellington Company’s The applicants said that k large demand was springing up in Australia for coke, for which this coal was peculiarly suitable, and they are negotiating for the delivery of 20,000 tons per annum, the purchaser having the option of making it 40,000.
