The ' Pall Mall Gazette' make 3 the startling suggestion that " Not a judge, not a magistrate, should ever be allowed to pass a sentence until be has served a term, how ever short, as an ordinary criminal convict in one of Her Majesty's prisons." Mr Edward Coombes has presented a fine water-color drawing, ' A Summer Squall, by David Cox, to the National Art Gallery, Sydney For smuggling jewellery ashore in Melbourne, from the R.M.S. Arcadia, i man named John Wright was fined L 144.
