TO THB EDITOB. Sir,—lt is to be hoped those of the public who take an interest in education will not stand aside and see the Education Board trample on Mr White as they did on Mr Farnie. It is a fact well known to every one of such as have been taking an interest in the doiDgs and sayings of the Board lately that every word Mr White spoke re election of teachers is simply the truth, and it is because it is the truth that the Board will do its utmost to compel him to acknowledge that he is wrong. Take the Port Chalmers case. I only know of other two names of candidates besides the three submitted, although I don't know any of the five either personally or by sight, and know that by no process of reasoning could the members of the Board justify their selection before any competent authority they like to name. One writer said in jour own paper that it was a foregone conclusion that if the successful candidate's name were sent by the Board he would be selected. It w&s sent, and was seleoted. But how was it sent? he by favoritism and influence only. Then take the Kelso case. In spite of all the dust tried to be thrown in the eyes of the public by the Board and its took, could evidence be taken on oath before a competent judge, it could be proved that Grant was the best candidate after all. I neither know Grant nor any of the three sent, but accidentally know this: Some one of the Board at its last meeting raid thai he had known of members of the Bond going to committees when they had appointments to mike "hatin hand" in the interest of education. Sir, I don't beHeve one single word of it. I have been a committeeman for a good many years, and I never onoe knew of any influence coming from Water street but it was to try and put inferior men over better and generally more independent men, as men of the White and Farnie stamp are not liked there; and I don't believe the member of the Board ever know of a case the reverse of my experience. What I would propose is that the Conference hold a meeting at once to support Mr White, and not allow him to be unmercifully driven from the service, as we can afford to do without education boards, but we cannot afford to let teachers like Mr Whits be driven out of the service simply beoause he has the independence to tell the truth—a man who is an ornament to the whole teaching staff of Otago; and I would go even further, and advise that if the Conference find it neceßrary they call a public meeting, and you oan have my subscription towards the expense at any time.—l am, etc., A Friend op Education.
