Morrieon, the man who shot Constable Sutherland, has been condemned to death. The jury recommended him to mercy on the ground that he only intended to maim his victim, but the Judge declined to accept the recommendation. Hia Honor eulogised Constable Sutherland, and said the prisoner had robbed the colony of a valuable officer. The recent storm experienced at Sydney is now travelling towards New Zealand at the rate of twenty miles an hour. Great damage has been done by floods in the Clarence district, and it is /eared a portion of the town of Grafton will be swept away. The place is partly under water, and communication is interrupted. Seven inches of rain have fallen in twenty-four hours.
