Fort Chalmers. ARRIVED.—JuIy 16, Wairarapa, b.b., 1,023 tons, Chatfield, from Melbourne via Hobart and the Bluff. Passengers: Mrs Edwards and child, MiBB Allen, Messrs Evans, Guild, Edwards, Kryett, Harry, Nicholls, Brown, Hyams, Wingfiek 1 ; and sixteen in the steerage. SAILED.- July 16. Invercargill, s.s., 136 tons, Sundstrum, for Invercargill. An accident happened to the machinery of Dredge 222 yesterday while at work on the bank near Hobart Town Point. After discharging cajgoatthe tongue wharf, the Tekapo steamed down to Port Chalmers yesterday evening. The Mawhera was hauled out of the graving dook yesterday evening, and her place taken up by the Tekapo. The Wairarapa, frara Melbourne via Hobart and the Bluff, arrived at Port Chalmers at 8 a.m. to-day. She left Melbourne at 4.50 p.m. on the 9th inst,. breastod Swan Island at 2.42 p m. on the 10th, passed Cape Pillar at 6.5 a.m. on the 11th, and arrived at Hobart at 9 15 a.m., hiving experienced strong S.E. winds; left Hobart at 5.15 p.m. same day ; had light westerly winds across, and breasted tho Solandera at 10.40 a.m. on the 14th, atd reached tho Bluff at 8.50 p ra. same day; saili d again at 4.30 p.m. on the 15th; had fine weather along the coast. The German barque Kenilworth has been wrecked at Fly River, New Guinea. A boat with the mate and five of the crew is missing; the rest have been rescued. She was bound from Newcastle to Sourabaya, in Java, with a oargo of ooal. The four-masted ship Drummuir, on entering Sydney Heads a weok last Monday, hoisted the signal "man overboard." The pilot sohooner Hawk, on the way to the outer station, boro j down, and was observed cruising about the place ; the Mavis, pilot schooner, also abahting In the eearoh. The ship, after going out to sea, returned shortly after three o'clock, and proceeded up the south channel. Williamß, the officer In charge of the Hawk, reports having searched for hours in tho vicinity where the man was lost, but saw neither man nor lifebuoy. Shortly after cruisiDg over the place he saw from the masthead a deep red tingo of water, apparently Wood, and concluded the mim had brcome a prey to ah»rks, as lately a number of tho blue species had been seen about the Heads. Auckland.—Penguin sailed 4 p.m. for New Plymouth. ___ _ TWENTY-FIVE DAYB ON A DESERT ISLAND. A wordojfulftory has been published of tho barque Gettysburg, of Zardene, which was wrecked on a desert island at Morant Cayee, thirty-three miles from Junaica. The vessel was bound from Monte Video to Pensacola in ballast, and wan manned by fifteen hands. On the morning of April 1 she struck on a coral reef outside M' rant Cayes. She commenced to break up, and five of Ihe crew were washed away and drowr.cd. The rest clung to the bottom of the barquo which was still above water. Ultimately Captain Steward, the mate, the carpenter and sailmaker, and five seamen reached the reef at daybreak. The Oayes was made out a mile to the westward of the reef. William darter, an able seaman, swam out to two spars, a mast, and a yard, and with the help of James Crawford, an ordinary seaman, who joined him, he contracted a raft By their efforts tho lives of Captain Stewart and their six other shipmates were saved. They were towed on to tho island nearest the Cayes, Carter swimmirg all the way, and thus steering the raft. There they found three cocoanuts to eat. There was no water, and the island was uninhabited. They landed completely naked, and after being thero two days, they dug for water and found some, but it was very brackish. On the third day they swam over to a larger island, where they discovered more water and cocoanutp. They remained there for over two weeks, existing upon shellfish, small crabs, and cocoanuts. During the last few days they caught a few birds, boobies, and ate them raw, as they had no means of lighting a fire. Fome littlo roots, like a common white radish, were also found and eaten, but were difficult of maßtic»t'on and digestion. A large shark was on tho watch > to catch the sailors, and they tried to catch him, but without success. On April 21, at low water, Caster Shaddock (the recond mate) and Edward M'Donald wadfd over to another island, and secured sufficient wood to make a small raft. The sun was so hot that they were bidly scorched and blistered. The raft was made, and all the sails were made out of old pieces of bags and some pieces of blanket and a bed which had been washed up. On the 22nd Jones and Allan started on the raft for Jamaica to procure assistance. They were victualled with a piece of pork, whioh had been washed up, all the cocoanuts that were left, and nine pints of fresh water, which was in some old bottles that were found on the island. The raft sunk to 18in below water, but both ends wero olcated. Its occupants wore up to their wa'sts in water, and they remained so for forty-eight houre. When on the 24th they landed at Beacon Point, seven mileß from Morant Bay, they lay down on the beach exhausted and slept until tho morning, when thoy proceeded to White Horse, three miles distant. At this place they found a black policeman, who gave them food and took them on to Morant Bay, where the Collector of Customs gave the constable some money, and telegraphed to the authorities at Kingston. From Morant Bay they were conveyed to Kingston, taken to the Sailors' Home, and then forwarded in a gunboat, which was to bring off Captain Stewart and the rest of the orew. Theße were finally taken off Cayes after they had been there twenty-five days, and a launch took them from Port Royal to Kingston. Shipping Telegrams. Auckland, July 15.—Blair Drummond, ship (Captain J. Hall), from London, 118 days out. On the 14th June, when the vessel was in the Southern OceaD, 8. Vinkenza, an A.8., fell overboard from aloft, and though efforts were made to save him he was lost.—Jessie, barquentlne, from Newcastle.—Waihora, from the South.— Mariposa, for San Franoisco.
