A good story is going the round about Mr Gladstone. Invited to subscribe to a certain charity, he replied on the usual post-card that innumerable applications of the kind were received by him, and that he had to confine his donations to local needs. The post-card was duly put up to auction, fetching two guineas, and G.O.M. appeared on the list of subscribers as a donor to that amount.
