ARRIVAL OF THE ALICE. The barque which was reported from Cape Saunders on Friday morning eleven miles E.N.B. proved to be the Alice, from New York. Sho is a wooden vessel of 818 tons register, and was built at "Weymouth, United States, in 1882, and is owned by Messrs Arnold and Cheney, of New York, She brings 1,300 tons of cargo, two-thirds of which is for Dunedin, and the remainder for Auckland. She is under the command of Captain Swain, who is on his first visit to New Zealand. Her passage, which has been marked by a succession of easterly winds while running down her easting, occupied 115 days, although only thirty-two days elapsed from New York until she crossed the Equator. We are indebted to Captain Swain for the following report:—Left New York on March 12, had moderate southerly winds until April 1, when she took the first of the N.K. trade in latitude 31deg 12miu N., longitude 35deg ISinin W.; it was moderate, and gave out in latitude 3deg 34miu N., longitude 25deg 52min, on April 11, and crossed the Fqnator on April 13, in longitude 27deg lOnain W,, having taken the S.E. trade toe day previous in latitude 2deg4lminN., longitude 27deg3min W. The trade was fair, and carried her down to latitude 18deg 15min S., longitude 35deg lOmin W., on April 18. It was followed by N.F. winds, and she crossed tho meridian of Greenwich on May 13, in latitude 37deg 19rain S., on the sixty-second day out, when she took a westerly breeze, and rounded the Cape of Good Hope on May 29, in latitude 40deg S. Thence she l;al to contend with winds from N.E. to E.N.E., with occasional S.W. and southerly winds with rain and thick foggy weather and high seas across the Southern Ocean, and passed tho meridian of Cape Leeuw>n on Juno 16, in latitude 46deg25rnin S.; still keeping similar weather she passed the island of Tasmania on Juno 25, in latitude 48deg 14min S,; thence sho had S.E. winds with foggy weather and heavy rain, and made her first landfall (the Snares) on the Ist inst., when she met light variable winds with foggy weather along the coast, and sighted Cape Saunders at daylight on tho sth inst., and towed into port as above. Her easting was run down on the mean parallel of 45deg 8. latitude. No ice nor wreckage was seen, and no ships spoken. Owing to her heavy draft, she will have to lighten before proceeding to Dunedin.
