Birrell has been committed for trial fer tho forgery of the receipt of Gregg and Co., ot Dunedin, for Ll2 Us 3d. Bail waa allowed in two sureties of Ll5O each on each charge.
ASHBURTON, June 16.
John Hampton has been committed for trial for the larceny of LlB 13s from John Hunter while intoxicated. Hunter was seat to gaol for twenty-four hours for contempt in appearing in the witness box the worse for drink.
CHRISTCHURCH, June 18.
A very large muster of volunteers, including the reserve corps, of which he was commandant, attended the Hon. Colonel Brett's funoral this afternoon. Colonels Toswill and Butts were pall-bearers. Bishop Harper presided at the Cathedral, where the service was choral, and there was an immense concourse of spectators.
