The ketch Gratitude, from Sydney, has been cruising around the Auckland coast for some time on a fiihing tour. On Saturday the Hinemoa came up with her in Wangiroa Harbor, and a Customs officer, who was on board the steamer, ordered the person in charge of the ketch to take her to Auckland. The Gratitude accordingly arrived in harbor to-day. It is stated that the vessel is to bo searched and her papers examined by the Customs authorities, who are reticent on the subject. The steamer Beautiful Star, with cargo and passengers from Oamaru, arrived at 9.45 p.m. on Saturday. She left Oamaru at 3 p.m- ; had fresh southerly wind, with S.E. swell and foggy weather, down the coast. The steamer Invercargill, from luvcrcvrgill via the Bluff, arrived at Dunedin at 7 a.m. yesterday, and steamed down to Port Chalmers this morning to discharge 1,200 oases meats and 47 bales wool at the export pier. She left Invercargill at S a.m. on the Bfcb inst.; reached the Bluff at 10.30 a.m,; left again at 2.30 p.m, same day; had light winds, with th’ck weather, along the coast. The Suakim, an iron ship of 1,018 tons, belonging to Liverpool, which left Newcastle for San Francisco on December 26 last, was posted at Lloyd’s on the 29th ult. as missing. A boat belonging to the Suakim (together with a Quantity of wreckage) was washed ashore at Raratonga during a gale. It is feared the"vossel must have foundered in a hurricane which vi Jted the island on Februa’y 4. The Kakanui left Dunedin on Saturday evening, with cargo, for Waikawa.
The Invercargill, from luveroarg’ll, arnv.d at the Rattray street wbaif at 7 a.m. yesterday. After landing n portion of her cargo this morning she steamed down to Pott Chalmers. The barque < live was towed to sea this forenoon, and tailed with oiigtnal cargo for Lyttelton. The Takapuca left the Rattray street wharf at 3 p m. to-day, with cargo and passengers, for Ntrth rn ports. The brigantine Enterprise is leading at the Jetty street wharf for Napier. The barque Mabel is expected to put out the last of her inwarl cargo to-day. fehe has taken in a largo quantity of ballast The Beautiful Star hmdod cargo at the Rattray street wharf this forenoon. The baique Io;h Awehas about 500 tons of dead weight cargo to put cut. She has Gamin need taking in ballast. The schooner liaheMa Anderson is at the tongue wharf. She sails f.r Hokitika with the first fair wind.

Departures: Rotorua 570 tons, Invercargill 123, Beautiful Star 140 (twice), Thius i 430, Mahinapua 205, Wiliam Turner 431, Kakanui 50; tota', 3,171 tons.
The Wakatipu, from Sydney via Well'ngton, arrived at Port Clulrreis at 7.30 a.m. tc-Jay, and after a short stay at the Geoigo street pier she steamed up to Dunedin. Mr Toucct, her purser, reports Icavi: g Sydney at 10.10 p m. on the Ist inst., cleared the Heads at 11 p.m., and breasted Cape Farewell lighthouse at o_so p.m. on tho 7th, and Stephens Island at 5 50 p.m., arriving at We'lington at 11.20 p m. same day, Laving expeiior.ccd strong easterly winds with h'gh tea and thick weather from Sydney to Cook Strait, followed by strong N.W. winds and thick weather to Wellington ; left Wellington at 2 25 p m, on the Bth, encountered bird southerly gale with high sea for ten hours, thence light southerly winds to arrival. The closest ocean race ever recorded has just been finished. The ships John M'Leod and Paul Revere left Manilla with cargoes of sugar kr New York, a challenge and wager having passed between tho two skippers. They kept together till passing Capo Horn, siglr.id e ch other eff Hattcras, were four days together in a galo, and were neok-and-neck at Sandy Hook, where tho American vessel (the Paul Revere) got a slant of wind, and dropped anchor in Now York harbor just ten minutes ahead of her rival. Both vessels had carried every st teh of canvas that tho weather would permit throughout the voyage. It has been mentioned that the steamships Star of Victoria and Star of England were to be engaged in tho New Zealard trade. These two boats have been chartered by the Colonial Union Company, and are to be employed in the conveyance of frozen mutton to London. Th.y will start on the voyage from London with errgo f >r Adelaide Melbourne, and Sydney, and will then proceed to New Zealand for their frozen freight, which will bo taken to London direct. Both si carnets have been chartered for twelve months, and it is said that the terms are L 36,000 each for that period. Both boats are high-class vessels, and form portion cf the Star line of steam and sailing vea. els owned by Sir J. P. Corty and Co ,of Belfast. Both boats are fitted with triple expansion engines of 850 hone-power nominal, and have been built with special regard to efficiency, irrespective of cost, and they are said to be finished specimens of maiino architecture. Both, as a matter of course, are ou the highest class at Lloyd’s. The Star of England-the latest built—made a series cf trial tiipa last monOi, and a mean speed of eleven knots was developed, with the vessel fully loadi d. The consumption of coal with these steameis is of a limited character. Captain Smith has command of the Star of Victoria, and Captain Simpson, well known in the Star of Russia, has been appointed to tho Star of England.—‘ Argus.’ Tho steamer Fifezhire, which is expected hero in the course of a few days to complete her loading for London, arrived at Melbourne on tho 27th ult. She loft London on April 7, and the commencement of the voyage was marked by hoistavus weather. Strong S.W. gales and a stubborn sea were mot with in crof ting the Bay of Biscay, and Las Palmas was notrescbel until the morning of the 14th ult. Coal was taken in at the island, and a start was made again on the night of the same date. Tho Equator was crossed on the 21st ult, in londtude lOJeg W., and strong wimlt with a high sea prevailed in the Utitmlo of the S.F. trade. On tho 2nd inst., in latitude 33dcg S., the rifeshire had to contend against strong S. W, gales and a heavy cross sea, In which abo was tofsed about a good deal. The sea at times roso to a fearful height, and dashed over her with great violence. On one of these cccaaiora a bort was smashed and washed away, and a portion of the bulwark tails also went. The refrigerating engine room was aho flooded, but beyond this there was no serious damage. The meridian of the Cape of Good was crossed on tho 3rd inst., in latitude 35.V)rg S., bat a stretch was made away to tho southward, and the max’mum latitude reached in running down tho easting was htitude 45.1 eg. Westerly and variable winds, the former blowing very hard at tunes, prevailed until the 2lst inst., when easterly weather set in, and lasted until arrival at Adelaide on the morning of the 20th May. Schooners of four masts are not to ray plentiful in these waters at any time, but a schooner of close upon I,OCO toss register, propelled by fore-and-aft canvas, carried on four roasts, has never probably been seen in this port before the arrival of tho Doughs Dearborn. Her net register is 976 tons. She is a new vessel, on her maiden voyage, and has a large general cargo from Boston. Her present draft is lift Sin. Tho vessel is fitted with steam hoistirg gear, and racking pumps capable of being attached. The Douglas Dearborn was launched on January 5 last, at Bath, Maine, in the United States, by Messrs A. Sewell and Co., the bui’ders and present owners. As a model she posses cs the lines of a yacht, having a magnificent entrance and exquisitely fine lines aft a most gracefully modelled ship. The idea was to adapt her chiefly for the lumber and coal trade, but she is equally cap -ble, of course, for g- neral trade. Her lumber capacity would he between 800,000 ft and 900.000 ft, carrying about one-fourth on deck. Tho dimensions of the schooner approximately are 196 ft length on tho keel, 40ft beam, and 20ft depth of hold. Some idea of the spread of sail may be gained from the following measurements of her spars; —Her four lower masts, all of equal height, reach up to 96ft from the keelson, and each terminates in a topmast of 45ft height. Tho fore, main, and mizzm booms aro each 42ft long, while the spanker is a splendid vpir 65ft in length. Added to these rve cf course the four j hs, three staysails, and not forgetting the topsails. A prettier rig or a more handsome wooden vessel it would be difficult to imagine. The vessel is in command cf Captain F. Welch, who i« said to be, like hia noble vessel, upon his first visit to Sydney. With him is Mr F. Hardy, chief officer, who has, however, been in tho Australian and the New Zcalrnd trade before. ‘Sydney Morning Herald.’ MOVEMENTS OF THE UNION STEAM SHIP COMPANY’S FLEET. Monday, Juke 10. Bluff.—To Anau anived 8 a.m. ; sai’od 5 p.m. for Dunedin.—Pukaki arrived yesterday morning; sails to-morrow for Melbourne. Wellington. —Mataroa arrived 8 a.m. from Napier; sailed this afternoon for Lyttelton. ARRIVAL OF THE TAINUI. Wellington, June 10.—The Tainui, from Hobart, arrived in harbor shortly after oltven o’clock last night, but owing to rough weather no communication was had. Sho was brought to tho wharf this morning, and tho only reason given for her detention is a long succession of strong seas, head wind-’, and heavy brad seas, as well as thick weather nearing the Tasmanian coast. There was no accident of any kind. She brings 11 hags of mails, 22 boxes parcel post, 110 passengers, and a large general cargo. Among her passengers is tho Rev. J. Micgregnr, of St. Cuthbert’s, Edinburgh, who is on his way to the Victorian Presbyterian Jubilee, Her passengers for Dunedin are : —Saloon— Mr Hit). She left Williamstown at 4 30 p m. on the sth inst.; experienced light variable winds and fine weather till the Sth ; since then, moderate westerly winds and rqually weather.
