THURSDAY ISLAND. June 1.
News by the Torres Strait mail steamer says that a boy shot three females at Shanghai. One woman died from her wounds; the others are reported to be dying. The Canton tea crops are below the average of last year’s by 20 per cent., but the quality is better. Cholera is increasing at Manila, the deaths averaging fifty a day. Disquieting nows comes from Corea. The treasury is empty, and the Government are unable to pay lor the 60,000 rifles that were ordered from abroad. Admiral Sheffield has been offered the position of King’s adviser, vice Judge Denny.
