Mrs Humphrey Ward is at present enjoying a well-earned rest in Italy. She received a very pleasant letter from Mr Gladstone on her article in the * Nineteenth Century,’ in which he criticises it on very much the same lines as he followed in his criticism of ‘ Robert Elsmere.’ She is engaged upon a new novel, which 1s to be a frankly human piece of fiction. This will be good news to that numerous body of critics who regard the human part of ‘ Robert Elsmere’ as of more interest than the religious. She was offered LI,OOO for a story of 30,000 words, and John Strange Williams LSOO for a “shilling shocker.” In London (population 4,282,921) last year there were 34,617 marriages, 131,078 births, and 78,707 deaths.
