The Woollen Factory Company, and, following their lead, other manufacturing firms, ask the Borough Council to exempt them from the operation of the local order changing the statutory half-holiday from Saturday to Thursday, as breaking the work in the middle of the week is a source of loss. Other business people petition that if any exemption is allowed it be only in favor of those who use steam. The mayor thinks that he cannot fix two. days under the Employment of Females Aot. The matter is to be further inquired into and brought under the notice of members. A wharf hand named Mathews was caught last night carrying a 221b box of plug tobacco ashore from the Janet Nicoll. Mr Cooper, Collector of Customs, sued for the penalty, LIOO. Defendant pleaded guilty. The Resident Magistrate reduced the penalty to one-fourth. Mr Cooper stated that the man told him he only went to get a pound, and was told that he could not have a pound but must take the box.
