The barque Wiiliam Turner, which is at the Jetty street whaif, has put out some 300 toDS of cargo. The barquo Hudson has completed ballasting, and sails this evening for Wellington to load for London. The Brunner, C»p ainEwan, left the Rattray street whaif at 10 p.m. yesterday with cargo for the West Coast ports via Oamaru. Tho American barque Mabel has landed about 159 tons of cwgo at the Rattray streot whaif. Tho Boautiful Star loft Dunedin at 10 p.m. yesterday with cargo and passengers for Oamaru. The ship Ralston le't Glasgow for this port on April 4. The barque Brussels has nearly completed her repairs at the Rattray street wharf. The barque Olivo has landed over 200 tons of her cargo at the Victoria wharf. It is turning out in excellent condition. The Waihora (Captain Popham) steamed down to Port Chalmers this forenoon, and, after embarking passengers and mails, left in the afternoon for Sydney via East Coast ports. The schooner Lizzie Ellen, with a cargo of timber from Fortrose, arrived at Dunedin this forenoon and discharged at the Jetty street wharf.
Wo take the following from the Sydney 'Telegraph'of May 10:—"The barqueDurisdeer, from Lyttelton, with a freight of wheat, made the run across in twenty-four dayß. Captain Sinclair reports:-Left Lyttelton on the 15th ult. with light northerly winds, which continued till the 19th. The vessel then encountered a terrific gale from the north-west with very hard squalls and a high sea, in which she labored and Btrained very heavily, and kept her deck continually full of water. During the height of the gale seas struck the ship, coming over the forecastle head and washing away a piece of rail, and also smashing the port-side light and other movables
about the decV. On the 20th, about noon, the weather began to improve, the wind veering to the south-east, with a dangerous sea. Thence till May 6 the vessel experienced fine but variable weather. Another severe gale was then fallen in with, commencing from the north and veering easterly, and then back to the westward, finally settling down at south-west and decreasing. Light winds, with cloudy weather and occasional showers and a heavy aoutherly swell, followed to arrival. The Brazilian man-of-war, Almirnnte Barrosa, has arrived at Sydney from Valparaiso. She is a composite screw steamer of 1,929 tons and 2,200 horse-power, and carries seven halfinch breech-loading gun?, and a crew of 250 men. She is a firat-class cruiser of the unprotected type. Among her officers is Prince -Augabta Leopoldo, son of the Duke of SaxeOoburg and (Jotha, and grandson of the Emperor of Brazil. A very rough experience befell the ship Garsfcon on her voyage from the United Kingdom to Sydney. The Garston left London on January 22, and on the 19th April (Good Friday) a terrible gale occurred crossing Bass Strait, the wind blew in frightful equalls from N.W., and there was a fearful sea running. Some very "sivage water" broke aboard, smashing everything about the decks. The lightning was very vivid. At 4 a.m. gale increasing, ship diving heavily into it. At 6 a.m. foretopgallant sail carried away. At 8 a. m. shipped an enormous sea which dashed four of the sailors so violently about the decks that they were unable to meve afterwards, being bruised severely about the body and badly hurt. It was a miracle the whole of them were not swept overboard. At 4 p m. oa the 20th blew the fore upper topsail away. At 8 p.m. gale still increasing, and at 10 p.m. another sea broke aboard, which smashed the forward port lifeboat. The forward house was flooded, doors stove in, and the sea dashed aft, flooding the saloon, smashing the doore, and breaking in tho skylight, many tons of water crashing through the glasswork. The decks were filled as well, atd the ship labored. At 2 a.m. on the 21st the weather moderated. All sail was got on her, and with light airs and Btrong advene current the port was made without further accident. In consequence of the great demand for mercantile ship bui'ding, much difficulty has been experienced in obtaining an adequate supply of steel material required for warahips. The result is that the conduction of the five secondclass protected cruisers constituting the Australian auxiliary fleet viz., the Pandora, Pelorua, Peisian, Phoenix, and Pryde—and the two torpedo gunboats, the Whiting and Wizard, has been considerably delayed. The Admiralty had hof ed to have expended L500.C00 on theso vessel* during the present financial year, but they find that L 280.000 will be sufficient. The remainder wi 1 have to be paid in the three subsequent years.
MISHAP TO THE CABARFEIDH. Auckland, May 22. The barque Cabarfeidh, for Sydney, went ashore at low water on Tory shaol, Kaipara, this morning, while attempting to cross the bar. The steamer Durham has gone to her assistance, and hopes are entertaked of getting her off. Later. —The Cabarfeidh was floated off, and the tug is now bringing her in. It is reported that she is leaking, and that her royal mast has gone. ___
