MINING NOTES. Mr Alfred Conliffe, mining expert, who recently went over to Stewart Island on behalf of the Cornwall Tin Mining Company, an Invercargill syndicate, writes to the secretary, Mr Roderick Maolcod. under date the 17th inst., as follows“I visited the ground known as Hall’s section to-day, and found the men had got payable tin in a spot whore I had directed them to sink. I washed while there eight dishes of dirt. I forward you the result, which is highly pleasing. I decided, after washing it, to forward you the tin ore, lam sorry that I have not had sufficient daylight to extract the little sand, and, as the steamer leaves at five o’clock in the morning, send it to you in its present state. I presume it will assay, in its present state, 65 per cent, of metallic tin. If cleaned the assay would be 76 per cent.; the ore being of a very good quality.” The result referred to by Mr Oonliffe was about 7oz to the dish, but Mr Oonliffe promises a full report by the following steamer.
