The steamer Brunner, from the West Coast, arrived at 4 p.m. y< sterday, and steamed up to Duiedin. The steamer Wakatipu left the George street pier at 3.30 pm. yesterday for Sydney via Lyttelton and Wellington. The hulk Cincinnati having been thoroughly overhauled and caulked, was taken out of the graving dock this forenoon. The s p. Pukaki, Captain A. Ander»on, from Melbourne direct, arrived at Port Chalmers at 1 p.m. Yesterday, and steamed direct to Dunedin. Mr H. O. Seigel, her purser, reports leaving Melbourne, in ballast, at 1.30 p.m. on the 13th Inst. ; passed Williamstown at 2 25 p.m., and cleared the Heads at 6.30 p.m.; passed Swan Island at 5.35 p.m. on the 14th, breasted the Solanders at 5.20 p.m. on the 18th, and entered Taiaroa Heads at noon yesterday. She experienced fresh S.W. and S.S.W. winds with moderate and heavy sea, with cloudy weather and heavy rain, throughout the passage. The barque Lorna Doone was towed to sea this morning by the s.s. Plucky, and sailed with a full cargo of grain for Melbourne. Tho repairs to the barque Brussels are rapidly progressing, and she will be ready for sea by the end of the week. The Kakanui left Dunedin this afternoon with cargo for Riverton. The barque Olive broke bulk this morning, and landed cargo at tho Victoria wharf. The Takapuna left the Rattray street wharf this sfternoon with cargo and passengers for Northern ports, The Centennial leaves Dunedin for Sydney via Northern ports on or about Thursday. A barque, supposed to bo the Clifton, from Newnftftlo. was reported parsing Cape Saunders at 0 30 p.m. to-day. The Invercargill discharged cargo at the Rattray street wharf to-day. The Pukaki took the ground in tbe Upper HaTbor yesterday, and was towed up to Dunedin this morning by the s.s. Plucky, which berthed her at the tongue wharf. Mararoa 1,248. Rosamond 556 Tarawera 1.269. Grafton 297, Wakatipu 1,158; totil, 5,652 tons. The Beautiful Star. Captain Brewer, with cargo and passengers from Oamaui, arrived at midnight on Saturday. In addition to other cargo, she brought 975 sacks oats and 283 sacks barley for transhipment to Melbourne, The Banks Peninsula, tho new steamer of tbe Peninsula and Akaroa Steam Navigation Company, arrived at Lyttelton on Friday. She is intended for the Chathams trade, and is a thoroughly substartial boat, reflectingcrpdit on her bui'ders. the Grancemouth Dockyard Company, and Mr Robert Brown, her engineer, who has supervised the construction, for which purpose ho went Home about a year ago. She is 120 ft long, and has 20ft beam, having a draught of 7ft 9in. Her rig is tint of a fore-and-aft schooner, her build that of tho clincher style, and she has an elliptical stern. She also hv* two water ballast tanks, which filled are equal to ten tons, and her hull is partitioned off in four watertight bulkheads, thereby ensuring safely In case of anv perioua accident. The engineToom is probably the finest part about her. She is fitted witli two compound surfacecondensing engines, steam for which is supp'ied from one steel boiler at a pressure of 1001b. There are f.uir cylinders, two each and two each 27in. the length of st'oke being 18in. Her nominal horse-power is sixtytwo, indicated liorsr-powr>r 430, and her speed is guaranteed at twelve knots per hoar. The makers of these engines are Mo-srs Hutson and Corbett, of Glasgow. £he was brought out from Gla'gow by Captain Gibbons (late master of the Lurline), who will be succeeded by Captain James Malnolmson (lato of the Antelope), who has Mr Thomas Whitehead aB mate, and Yr W. ARRIVAL OF THE MABEL. A barque ohowing American colors was sighted yesterday morning about nine miles north from T-iaroa Heads standing in towards the land, and at 3 p.m. the tug Plucky proceeded down to t»nder the stranger, which proved to be the Mabel, from New York, bringing her acrnus the bar at 4.15 p.m. under the charge of Pilot Paton, against a strong S.W. breeze. In coming up the harbor the Customs boat ranged alongside, and all being well, she was admitted to pratique by Vr Drysdale, boarded and cleared in by Mr B. T. Macdonrell, Customs Furveyor, continuing her course as far as Oarey Bay, where she anchored in readiness to bo towed ti Dunedin, her draught being 18ft. The Mabel is a wholesome looking wooden vessel, of 750 tons register, built by Messrs Brasedale and Co., of Bath, R tato of Maine, in 1874, and owned by Messrs Hinsley Brothers and Co., of Boston. She is commanded by Captain Snow, ft gentleman wel' known in New Zealand, and whose last visit to this port was some eight years since. She brings a full cargo, consisting of some 1,300 tons, the whole of wh'ch is for Dunedin. and is consigned to Messrs NeiU and Co., Limited. Her passage, which is rather a long one for this vessel, has occupied 120 days from port to port, the length of which U attributed to light winds at the outset, owing to which it was not until the forty-second day out that die crossed the Equator. We are indebted to Captain Snow for the following report of the passage :—Left New York on January 18 with a westerly brerze, which held for twelve days, and was followed by light S.E. and southerly winds until February 12, on which day Bhe picked up the N.E. trade in latitude 28deg 29min N., longitude 40deg 54min W.; it was fresh at the outset, and succeeded by light ai'S to latitude ldeg N., longitude 29deg 2min W. on March 1, crossing the Fquitor on the same day, being fie fortysecond day out: thence she bad light baffling winds for three days, when Bhe took the S.K. trade in latitude 4deg 15min S., longitude 29deg 50min \V. The trade was very light, and gave out in latitude 20Jeg S. on March 14, followed by light variable winds for a few days, when moderate northerly and N.W. winds set in, and the meridian of Greenwich was crossed on April 5 in latitude 44deg 58min S., when the wind freshened, and she rounded the Care of Good Hope on April 8 in latitude 44deg 52min S.; thence she had a succession of heavy gales from N.W. to S.W., attended by frequent heavy squalls of snow, hail, and rain across the Southern Ocean, and passed the meridian of Cape Leeuwin on May 3 in latitude 45deg 37min S.; still keeping similar weather, she passed the island of Tasmania on May 13 in latitude 48deg 35min S. ; thence she had S.W. to N.W. and westerly gales with high sea and snow squalls, and made her first land-fall-the Snares—at 5 p.m. on the 17th; had strong westerly winds along the coast, and sighted Cape Saunders at 7 a.m. yesterday with a heavy southerly gale, which drove her to the northward; the gale slightly moderated, and she made the Heads and was towed into port as above. No ice nor wreckage was seen, and no i-hips spoken. Her easting was ran down in latitude 48deg S.
