Wo ('North Otago Times') liave heard of a wonderful growth of potatoes. Up to tho piosent it haii hj en generally supposed that potatoes c .uld only be grown with their haulms showing abovo the grouud. Thin, however, is a mistake, and fchsws that wo a'u ajit to form conclusions without proper and reasonable, grounds fcr a r riving at them. This se:>son a resident of Oarnaru planted <"ir)y pot.-toex, and put them at too great a depth in the ground. As nothing appeared above tiio ground to indicate that the potatoes were making the ordinary p ogress, he. concluded they had "gone oil"," and planted cabbages above tho spot where they Mere put in. In the course of time the cabbages went the way of all cabbages, and some of tho ground was turned over. To tho astonishment of tho party a fine crop of early potatoes was lifted. The potatoes had grown without putting "shaws" abovo the ground. If this can be calculated upon to take place every time potatoes are planted deep, it will bo better to follow out this plon than run the risk of frosts and droughts by planting noar tho surface. The above is a fast.
